Frequently Asked Questions

What are chemical peels?

Chemical peels are treatments that involve the application of a chemical exfoliant to remove damaged layers of skin. These peels are categorised into different grades, ranging from very superficial to deep, based on the depth of penetration and the amount of skin removed. The choice of peel depth depends on factors such as the extent of skin type, photodamage, specific concerns like sunspots, rejuvenation, congested skin, and hyperpigmentation. By stimulating skin cell regeneration, chemical peels can significantly enhance the overall appearance of the skin.

Which peel is best for me?

The choice of peel depends on your specific skin needs. We recommend booking a complimentary skin consultation for personalised advice. Here are some peels available at Bryght:

  • Lactic Peel: helps brighten the skin, improve hydration, and is generally considered safe for use during pregnancy, breastfeeding, and sensitive skin conditions.
  • Glycolic Peel: This peel is effective in addressing hyperpigmentation concerns, reducing uneven skin tone, and improving the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Salicylic Peel: addresses acne breakouts and oily skin. It helps control oil production, unclogs pores, and can improve the overall appearance of acne-prone skin.
  • Mandelic Peel: it is an alpha hydroxy acid that is used in peels to address multiple skin concerns. It can help reduce sebum production, improve acne and blackheads, fade acne scarring, and address hyperpigmentation. and is safe for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

It’s important to note that individual results may vary. It’s always essential to consult with our dermal therapist to determine which peel is most suitable for your specific skin concerns, skin type, and to ensure that they are safe for your particular circumstances.

It is recommended to avoid having any chemical peel if you have an open wound or a cold sore. Open wounds can increase the risk of infection, and cold sores are highly contagious. If you are undergoing or have recently completed an Accutane course, it is best to wait until the treatment is finished and allow sufficient time for the medication to exit your system before scheduling a treatment.

Are there any side effects & risks?

Chemical peels are generally safe when performed by a skilled dermal therapist. However, there are potential side effects such as temporary redness, swelling, sensitivity, peeling, and changes in skin pigmentation. Deeper peels carry a slightly higher risk of complications like infection or scarring. Prior to a chemical peel, it’s important to have a consultation with our dermal therapist to assess your skin and discuss your concerns for personalised recommendations.

How many sessions are needed to see results?

The number of sessions needed depends on several factors, including the desired results, the severity of the skin condition being treated, and the type of peel used. Some individuals may see noticeable improvements after a single session, while others may require a series of peels spaced several weeks apart to achieve their desired outcome.

What is the treatment process?

Your treatment includes a cleanse using medical-grade products and the chemical peel solution applied to your skin. After the peel has activated, we will put a soothing gel on your skin, as well as an SPF. Peels are an excellent skin treatment to combine with LED light therapy or Skin Needling. Your Bryght dermal therapist will discuss your options.

Is a chemical peel painful?

The level of discomfort during a chemical peel varies based on its depth. Superficial peels cause mild tingling or stinging, well-tolerated by most. However, medium and deep peels can be more uncomfortable.

How long will my appointment take?

The peel treatment typically lasts for 30 minutes unless you add LED light therapy, which can extent the appointment up to 50 minutes.

Is there any prep for this treatment?

To maximise the benefits of your treatment and avoid unwanted irritation and side effects, prepare your skin beforehand. Avoid exfoliation for at least one week prior to your appointment, as chemical peels provide in-depth exfoliation. Be cautious of skincare products with exfoliating effects. Protect your skin from the sun as much as possible before the treatment by wearing sunscreen with SPF 50+. Remember to stay hydrated.

Are there any products I should be using at home?

We recommend using medical-grade skincare products. Our personal favourites are the Aspect Dr skincare range. And of course, you should always apply SPF 50+ daily.

How often should you chemical peel to maintain results?

The frequency of chemical peels to maintain results can vary, but typically, mild peels can be done every month, while medium-depth peels are spaced out every three to six months. Deep peels are usually performed once and can provide results that last for several years. Consult our dermal therapist for a personalised consultation.
